Reflecting and setting SMART goals for your hospitality career in 2025

As we approach the new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the past year and set intentional goals for the future. This worksheet is designed to help young hospitality professionals identify achievements, address challenges, and map out their career and personal growth strategies. Remember, effective goals are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

Part 1: Reflecting on the past year

Take stock of where you’ve been and how far you’ve come by answering these questions:

  1. What were my biggest achievements?
List your wins over the past 12 months – big or small.
  2. What challenges did I face?
Highlight areas for improvement or significant hurdles you overcame.
  3. What new skills did I develop?
Reflect on technical, soft, or management skills you learned.
  4. What accomplishments am I most proud of?
Acknowledge moments that made you feel proud personally or professionally.

Part 2: Goal setting for the coming year

Plan how to advance your career and improve personally in 2025.

  1. Set 1-3 professional goals

Think about specific objectives you want to achieve in the next year.
Example: Earn the Certified Hospitality Supervisor (CHS) certification by 30 June.

  • Create an action plan for each goal

Break down each goal into clear, actionable steps:

  • Research CHS requirements and exam details (1 week)
  • Enrol in the CHS preparatory course (1 month)
  • Prepare for and pass the CHS exam (3 months)
  • Apply for and receive the CHS certification (1 month)
  • Identify resources and support needed

Think about what will help make your goals achievable.
Example:

  • Funding for the course and exam
  • Time off work to study and test
  • Guidance from a CHS-certified mentor
  • Set 1-3 personal goals

Balance your professional ambitions by focusing on personal growth.
Example: Build a consistent exercise routine with 3 workouts per week.

  • Action plan for personal goals

Outline specific steps to achieve these goals:

  • Research workout routines (1 week)
  • Schedule workouts in your calendar 3 times per week (ongoing)
  • Meal prep healthy snacks and lunches (weekly)
  • Track progress using a fitness app (daily)
  • Identify and overcome obstacles

Anticipate potential challenges and plan how to navigate them.

Example obstacles and solutions:

  • Busy schedule: Block workout times in advance and have a backup plan for missed sessions.
  • Motivation dips: Find a workout buddy or join a fitness challenge.
  • Travel interruptions: Pack resistance bands or research nearby workout facilities.

Part 3: Make progress and adjust

Goal setting isn’t static. Regularly review your progress, celebrate small wins, and adjust goals as your circumstances evolve. Checking in quarterly can help you stay focused, motivated, and flexible when challenges arise.

With thoughtful planning and a commitment to staying on course, 2025 can be a year of incredible growth and success in your hospitality journey.
