Home Affairs extends ZEP deadline until 28 November 2025

The latest Government Gazette, published on November 29, 2024, includes significant updates from the Department of Home Affairs regarding the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP) holders.

  • Extension of ZEP Validity: The Minister of Home Affairs, has announced an extension of the validity of ZEPs until November 28, 2025. This decision follows a directive from the Gauteng High Court to consult with affected ZEP holders and stakeholders about the future of the current dispensation.
  • Protection from Deportation: ZEP holders will not face arrest or deportation related to their permit status during this extension period. They can enter and exit South Africa without needing a valid exemption certificate or visa, provided they meet other entry requirements.
  • Immigration Advisory Board: The reactivation of the Immigration Advisory Board (IAB) is underway to ensure compliance with the High Court’s order and to facilitate a fair consultation process.
