New regulations to replace SA’s state of disaster

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has gazetted new regulations, which could see South Africa’s national state of disaster lifted by 5 April 2022.

The regulations are currently open for public comment until 17h00 on 1 April, and will help in informing the government’s decision on when and how to lift the state of disaster in the coming weeks.

During the briefing, the minister said that the state of disaster cannot be lifted in a ‘reckless and abrupt manner’, and that some rules would likely remain in place for a further 30-day period once it is lifted. These include regulations around wearing masks, limitations on gatherings, and the payment of the R350 social relief of distress grant.

Based on the comments received, president Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation on lifting the state of disaster, hopefully by 5 April.
