FEDHASA Cape Celebrates 20th AGM at Iconic FNB Portside

The recent FEDHASA Cape Annual General Meeting (also known as Another Great Meeting) was more than a routine gathering; it was a reminder of our shared purpose and the unique, connected community that drives the Cape’s tourism sector.

Our host Nicole Sykes from FNB, welcomed guests to the iconic 28th floor at FNB Portside, Cape Town’s tallest building. Lee-Anne Singer, FEDHASA Cape Chair opened the proceedings with a summary of our accomplishments over the past year.

FEDHASA has made remarkable strides in strengthening our community and driving positive change within the hospitality sector. We formed key partnerships, such as those with The Restaurant Collective and the SA Chefs Association, enhancing support networks across the industry. Our work in advocacy, visa reform and engagement with various sectors of government brought critical issues into focus, while the introduction of the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme set to launch in January 2025 marks a significant step forward in attracting visitors from key source markets from China and India. Initiatives like the Sisterhood for Industry Support (SIS) and the Green Tourism Incentive Programme demonstrate our commitment to sustainable and inclusive growth. These milestones, along with reintroducing the Tourism Grading Incentive Programme and securing a seat on the CATHSSETA board, reflect our dedication to building a more resilient and vibrant industry.

Lee-Anne also expressed heartfelt appreciation for the dedication and resilience shown by our members throughout the year. She highlighted the importance of our community’s collective effort, noting how the unique, personal connections within FEDHASA Cape have fostered a spirit of collaboration and mutual support. She emphasised that every success achieved in the past year is a testament to the passion, commitment, and hard work of everyone involved, from board members across the country, our teams to industry partners.

Keynote speaker Ashley Muller shared captivating insights on South Africa’s landmark properties, showcasing their cultural and economic significance within the tourism landscape. Her reflections highlighted our responsibility to preserve these national treasures, which embody the heart of Cape Town hospitality.

Treasurer Glyn Taylor presented a positive financial report, reaffirming FEDHASA’s solid financial foundation. This was a significant moment, as it marked Glyn’s final AGM in his role after years of dedicated service. We extend our heartfelt thank-you’s to Glyn for his invaluable contributions and welcome Emile Langenhoven as our new Treasurer.

One of the AGM’s highlights was the annual board fireside chat, moderated by Neil Hughes, featuring Rema Wiese, our Executive Officer, Phelokazi Mbebe, who leads our Young Professionals, Lee-Anne Singer and Lesego Majatladi, head of Skills Development. The open discussion offered a deep look into FEDHASA’s journey, celebrating Rema’s two decades of dedication, the future of the hospitality landscape and FEDHASA’s role in building a sustainable industry.

Our AGM also marked the exciting launch of our partnership with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, a testament to our support of local culture and the arts. Adding to the celebration was the debut of the ‘Philharmonic’ signature cocktail—a refreshing symbol of our vibrant community spirit.

In keeping with our theme of community, we introduced the FEDHASA CAPE Community Campaign, featuring pledge cards inviting everyone in the hospitality sector to make meaningful commitments to supporting FEDHASA’s initiatives. These cards encourage members to offer mentorship, share expertise, and step up as trusted partners. We were overwhelmed by the positive response to the Community Pledge Campaign and are thrilled that so many young professionals are set to gain new mentors and official FEDHASA memberships. This support will not only elevate their careers but also strengthen the future of our entire community.

As we honoured the contributions of past board members and chairs like Jeff Rosenberg, Dirk Elzinga, Nils Heckscher &  Michelè de Witt  in attendance, we also expressed our gratitude to partners and sponsors.

Special thanks to Century City Conference Centre for hosting our monthly board meetings, Dentons Attorneys for their ongoing legal support, and Alto Wines and Stellenbosch Wine Routes for generously donating wine for the event. Also a special mention to Herman and Wouna of JHG who have been assisting us with compliance and corporate governance. These leaders remind us that FEDHASA isn’t just an association—it’s a family of advocates working to uphold and grow the Cape’s tourism identity.

The AGM set a collaborative tone, underscoring how a unified community can inspire resilience, growth, and meaningful impact. And as we approach the season, let’s continue building on this momentum, working together to make the Cape’s hospitality industry more inclusive, sustainable, and welcoming for all.
