International Tourism in South Africa Rebounds in June 2024
Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) has released its latest report on international tourism, revealing a significant uptick in visitor numbers for June 2024. The data paints a picture of a robust recovery in the country’s tourism sector.
A total of 2,452,882 travellers passed through South Africa’s ports of entry and exit during the month, comprising both South African residents and foreign travellers. Of these, 1,659,185 were foreign travellers, with 872,501 classified as foreign arrivals.
The report highlights that 848,921 of these arrivals were visitors, split between 207,637 same-day visitors and 641,284 overnight visitors, classified as tourists.
Regional breakdown of tourists shows a strong representation from Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, accounting for 77% (494,006) of all tourists. Zimbabwe led the pack with 169,490 visitors, followed by Mozambique with 123,647 and Eswatini with 64,397.
Overseas tourists made up 21% (134,396) of the total, with the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia being the top three contributors. The US led with 40,597 tourists, followed by the UK with 15,601 and Australia with 7,967.
Visitors from other African countries outside SADC constituted 1.8% (11,863) of all tourists, with Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria being the primary sources.
These figures suggest a resurgence in South Africa’s tourism industry, potentially indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels of international travel. The diversity of visitors from various regions underscores South Africa’s appeal as a global tourist destination.
