The latest StatsSA International Tourism report for August 2024 reveals a mixed picture for South Africa’s tourism industry. While overall traveller numbers have decreased compared to the previous year, there has been a notable uptick in foreign visitors.
In August 2024, a total of 2,376,711 travellers passed through South Africa’s borders, including arrivals, departures, and transits. Of these, nearly three-quarters (73%) were foreign travellers, whilst South African residents accounted for the remaining 27%.
The report highlights a significant increase in foreign visitors, with 902,468 recorded in August. This figure represents a staggering 97.7% of all foreign arrivals, with the vast majority (79.6%) staying overnight, classified as tourists.
However, the overall picture shows a year-on-year decline. Comparing August 2024 to August 2023, both South African residents and foreign travellers saw a decrease in arrivals and departures. Interestingly, transit numbers bucked this trend, showing an increase for both groups.
Month-on-month data paints a more nuanced picture. Whilst South African resident arrivals decreased from July to August 2024, foreign traveller arrivals saw an increase during the same period.
These figures suggest that while domestic travel may be facing challenges, South Africa’s appeal as an international destination remains strong. The tourism industry will likely be watching closely to see if this foreign visitor trend continues in the coming months.
