National minimum wage review & proposed adjustment for the year 2024 published in December 2023

The National Minimum Wage Commission has published recommendations on the annual review of the national minimum wage and has invited written comments from the public.

The chairperson is quoted as saying that “based on a rigorous analysis of the prevailing economic state of the country, where thorough regard was given to publicly available data on key indicators and the submissions by stakeholders, the results of the deliberations for the review of the national minimum wage were as follows:

Eight of the twelve commissioners propose that the national minimum wage increase by CPI plus 3%. Three of the commissioners were in support of a CPI adjustment for 2024. One commissioner proposed CPI plus 0.75%.”

The document provides all the relevant research and motivations that lead to the various proposals made by the commissioners.

The consumer price inflation [CPI] rate during the deliberations was 5.4% (September 2023).

“However, it is important to note that the inflation rate that will be implemented will be the rate six weeks prior to the Minister’s approval.”

For those wishing to comment, submissions should be in writing and addressed to The Directorate, Employment Standards, Department of Employment & Labour, Private Bag X117, Pretoria 001, or sent by email to nmwreview@labour.gov.za by no later than the 8th of January 2023.
