Engaging Provinces: Shaping the Gastronomy Tourism Framework (GTF) Together

The Department of Tourism is taking the initiative to develop a Gastronomy Tourism Framework (GTF), aiming to establish guidelines for the creation of provincial gastronomy tourism strategies.

The framework aims to promote inclusive and sustainable development of gastronomy tourism experiences throughout South Africa. By showcasing the country’s history, culture, heritage, geographic diversity, and agricultural richness, the frameworks will contribute to community development, poverty alleviation, and the empowerment of women and youth, all of which are crucial for sustainable tourism.

The ultimate goal is to align tourism growth with international trends, offering unique gastronomy tourism experiences that highlight the diverse heritage, culture, and agricultural offerings of South Africa. The Department of Tourism is thrilled to update key stakeholders across the country on the progress made so far and to seek their valuable insights and input to enrich the implementation plan for realizing the objectives of the Gastronomy Tourism Frameworks.

To facilitate this process, provincial consultations will be conducted through half-day workshops in each province from July to August. During these workshops, the Department will present the Gastronomy Tourism Framework and gather input from key stakeholders regarding implementation priorities specific to each province.

The Gastronomy Tourism Consultations are scheduled as follows:

  • 11 July – Free State, Bloemfontein
  • 13 July – KwaZulu Natal, Durban
  • 18 July – Northern Cape, Upington
  • 20 July – Limpopo, Polokwane
  • 25 July – North West, Rustenburg
  • 27 July – Eastern Cape, Gqeberha
  • 3 August – Mpumalanga, Nelspruit
  • 24 August – Western Cape, Cape Town
  • Date to be confirmed – Gauteng

Further information and details regarding the venues will be communicated in due course.
