Tourist Accommodation and Tourism stats – August 2023 Insights

StatsSA has released the accommodations and tourism statistics for August 2023.

Tourist Arrivals

In August 2023, 2 577 724 travellers (arrivals, departures, and transits) passed through South Africa’s ports of entry/exit. They were made up of 690 126 South African residents and 1 887 598 foreign travellers. Foreign arrivals: 985 800 were made up of 29 325 non-visitors and 956 475 visitors. The visitors consisted of 248 316 same-day visitors and 708 159 overnight visitors (tourists). The breakdown of the tourists by region is as follows: 165 705 from overseas; 530 625 from the SADC countries; 10 942 from ‘other’ African countries and the country of residence of 887 tourists was classified as unspecified.

In August 2022, 2 206 838 travellers (arrivals, departures, and transits) passed through South Africa’s ports of entry/exit. They were made up of 653 190 South African residents and 1 553 648 foreign travellers. Foreign arrivals: 820 708 were made up of 65 506 non-visitors and 755 202 visitors. The visitors consisted of 199 370 same-day visitors and 555 832 overnight visitors (tourists). The breakdown of the tourists by region is as follows: 132 757 from overseas; 413 522 from the SADC countries; 8 725 from ‘other’ African countries and the country of residence of 828 tourists was classified as unspecified.

Tourist Accommodation

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 17,8% in July 2023 compared with July 2022.

Income from accommodation increased by 29,1% year-on-year in July 2023, the result of a 7,5% increase in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 20,1% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In July 2023, year-on-year increases in income from accommodation were reported for:

  • hotels (30,3% and contributing 18,7 percentage points); and
  • other accommodation (34,2% and contributing 10,7 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 31.7% in the three months ending July 2023, compared to the same period in July 2022.The main contributors to this increase were:

  • hotels (31,8% and contributing 19,7 percentage points); and
  • other accommodation (37,2% and contributing 11,6 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation decreased by 1,4% month-on-month in July 2023 following an increase of 4,5% month-on-month in June 2023.
