StatsSA Releases The Latest Statistics On The Tourism And Hospitality Sector

The StatsSA reports on Accommodation, Food and Beverage and Tourism performance in South Africa are showing continued signs of recovery for the tourism and hospitality sector.

Please see below a breakdown of the latest figures for Tourist Accommodation and the Food & Beverages sectors for February 2022.

Key findings – Tourist Accommodation February 2022

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 139,5% in February 2022 compared with February 2021. 

Income from accommodation increased by 98,3% year-on-year in February 2022, the result of a 59,8% increase in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 24,1% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In February 2022, the largest contributors to the 98,3% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation were:

  • hotels (138,1% and contributing 66,0 percentage points); and
  • other accommodation (53,6% and contributing 23,2 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 48,6% in the three months ended February 2022 compared with the three months ended February 2021. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • hotels (81,4% and contributing 36,4 percentage points); and
  • other accommodation (16,2% and contributing 7,5 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation increased by 4,4% month-on-month in February 2022 and decreased by 5,4% month-on-month in January 2022.

Key findings – Food and Beverage February 2022

Year-on-year percentage change in food and beverages income at constant 2015 prices by type of income

Measured in real terms (constant 2015 prices), total income generated by the food and beverages industry increased by 17,3% in February 2022 compared with February 2021. Positive annual growth rates were recorded for ‘other’ income (25,7%) and income from food sales (21,2%).

In February 2022, the main contributors to the 17,3% year-on-year increase were:

·       takeaway and fast-food outlets (20,8% and contributing 7,0 percentage points); and

·       catering services (48,2% and contributing 6,4 percentage points).

Food and beverages income at constant 2015 prices for the latest three months by type of enterprise

Total income increased by 25,9% in the three months ended February 2022 compared with the three months ended February 2021. The main contributors to this increase were:

·       restaurants and coffee shops (24,4% and contributing 12,5 percentage points); and

·       takeaway and fast-food outlets (28,4% and contributing 9,9 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income for the food and beverages industry increased by 0,1% in February 2022 compared with January 2022. This followed month-on-month changes of 3,4% in January 2022 and -5,2% in December 2021.
