StatsSA has released the February 2023 accommodation report and Tourism & Migration key report for March 2023.
Tourist Accommodation February 2023
Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 34,8% in February 2023 compared with February 2022.
Income from accommodation increased by 59,4% year-on-year in February 2023, the result of a 12,0% increase in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 42,3% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.
In February 2023, the largest contributors to the 59,4% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation were:
- hotels (69,1% and contributing 35,0 percentage points); and
- other accommodation (55,9% and contributing 22,0 percentage points).
Income from accommodation increased by 51,6% in the three months ended February 2023 compared with the three months ended February 2022. The main contributors to this increase were:
- hotels (65,1% and contributing 30,9 percentage points); and
- other accommodation (44,5% and contributing 18,8 percentage points).
Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation increased by 2,7% month-on-month in February 2023 following a decrease of 0,3% month-on-month in January 2023.

StatsSA Tourism & Migration key findings report for March 2023
n March 2023, 2 445 237 travellers (arrivals, departures, and transits) passed through South Africa’s ports of entry/exit. They were made up of 699 326 South African residents and 1 745 911 foreign travellers. Foreign arrivals, 905 627 were made up of 28 856 non-visitors and 876 771 visitors. The visitors consisted of 218 067 same-day visitors and 658 704 overnight visitors (tourists). The breakdown of the tourists by region is as follows: 187 631 from overseas; 459 534 from the SADC countries; 10 407 from ‘other’ African countries and the country of residence of 1 132 tourists was classified as unspecified.
