StatsSA Food and Beverage report: Strong growth in industry income highlighted for June 2023

StatsSA has released the Food and Beverage report for June 2023, outlining the following highlights:

Year-on-year percentage change in food and beverage income at constant 2019 prices by income type:

Measured in real terms (constant 2019 prices), the total income generated by the food and beverage industry increased by 7.1% in June 2023 when compared with June 2022. The most substantial annual growth rates were observed in:

  • Bar sales (18.6%)
  • Other income (14.1%)

Year-on-year percentage change in food and beverage income at constant 2019 prices by enterprise type:

In June 2023, the primary contributor to the 7.1% year-on-year increase was restaurants and coffee shops, demonstrating a growth of 7.6% and contributing 3.5 percentage points.

Food and beverage income at constant 2019 prices for the most recent three months by enterprise type:

During the second quarter of 2023, total income increased by 6.7% compared to the same period in 2022. The primary drivers of this increase were:

  • Restaurants and coffee shops, with a growth of 6.0% and contributing 2.8 percentage points
  • Catering services, which experienced a substantial increase of 14.4% and contributed 2.2 percentage points

Seasonally adjusted income for the food and beverages industry saw a 0.1% increase in June 2023 when compared with May 2023. This follows month-on-month changes of 1.1% in May 2023 and 2.2% in April 2023.
