Duties & Responsibilities

Tourism is a significant economic activity in South Africa and a key stimulant for job creation as well as a contributing factor to GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth. South African Tourism has an important role in contributing to the growth of tourism in both local and international markets, by using innovative and focused marketing strategies based on research and strong stakeholder collaboration.
 
South African Tourism is governed by a board that is appointed by the Minister of Tourism and the CEO commences with policy instruments of government, and then in the role of CEO as the Head of the Agency reports to the Chairperson of the South African Tourism Board. The preferred candidate must be a results-driven and credible individual with strong interpersonal, leadership, and strategic skills. The candidate must have strong business acumen, creative flair, and manage multi-faceted stakeholder relationships against a political business background to make South Africa one of the most preferred tourism destinations.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for the following critical performance areas:

  • Support the National Tourism Sector Strategy through a marketing strategy that exploits South Africa’s competitive advantage
  • Provide strategic vision and leadership for the organisation
  • Manage individual Executives and the Executive team performance within the organisation
  • Ensure sustainable growth in international tourist arrivals through the marketing of both leisure tourism and business events
  • Ensure an increased focus on domestic tourism marketing, linked to the Tourism Recovery Plan
  • Ensure a contribution towards increased GDP growth and job creation
  • Facilitate and support the transformation agenda of the tourism industry
  • Provide strategic leadership to quality assurance within tourism, thereby enhancing the consumer brand experience
  • Communicate, network, and build strategic partnerships with all relevant tourism stakeholders in government and industry both locally and abroad
  • Ensure that South African Tourism operates according to international best practices and maintains good governance through prudent financial management, as well as ensuring compliance with the Public Finance Management Act and all other legislation affecting South African Tourism

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A recognised Bachelor’s Degree
  • A recognised postgraduate qualification, preferably a Master’s Degree or an equivalent qualification, will be an added advantage
  • At least 10 years of proven experience in senior management, including 5 years at executive-level
  • Understanding of government systems and protocols
  • Public Service/Public Entities experience at senior management level is preferable
  • An understanding of the tourism industry (Government Policy and Private Sector Stakeholder landscape), as well as familiarity with the Government reporting processes and financial management regime
  • Organisational Transformation and turnaround experience
  • Ability to lead and implement transformation initiatives
  • Understanding of technology & 4IR imperatives and their impact on the sector
  • Knowledge of legislation and regulations that govern the Public Service e.g., the Public Service Act
  • Knowledge of the PFMA and regulations, and other relevant legislation e.g., the National Strategic Intelligence Act, the National Archives of South Africa Act and the Promotion of Access to Information Act
  • Performance monitoring, evaluation, and reporting frameworks, systems, and processes
  • Relevant legislation and regulatory requirements namely PFMA, Treasury Regulations, and Frameworks on performance information and strategic plans
  • King IV principles

The successful applicant will also possess the following attributes:

  • General management and business acumen
  • General Financial Management Skills
  • An ability to self-motivate together with innovative leadership and excellent people management capabilities
  • Be able to maintain a creative and conducive working environment for employees
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with an ability to communicate complex concepts effectively to various stakeholders
  • Have the ability to respond to external changes
