Gauteng Department of Economic Development: Publication of the Final Gauteng Gambling Policy

The MEC for Economic Development has published the Final Gauteng Gambling Policy.

You will recall that a FEDHASA communique entitled “The Gauteng Gambling Act, 1995: Draft policy open for review” was forwarded to members on the 29th June last year.

The Gauteng Gambling Policy essentially sets out proposals designed to update and modernise the existing provincial gambling legislation and resolve a number of challenges that were frustrating both the industry and the regulators. Additional areas covered in the policy include updating the legislation in order to align it with more recent and relevant statutes – the Protection of Personal Information Act being one example. The policy looks to amend and update matters such as governance and board membership, marketing and promotions, offences and fines, digitisation and interactive gambling amongst others.

The policy document will in all probability be of greater interest to those companies operating casino’s and large gaming facilities.
